Navigating barriers from language to stigma, the Latino community has been traditionally underserved in access to mental health treatment.
Data shows that Latino adults remain far below the U.S. average in receiving mental health services, despite experiencing mental health conditions at the same rate as other adults.
This problem is especially serious for young people in the Latino community. In 2018, more than half of Hispanic young adults with a serious mental health condition were unlikely to seek out treatment.
“If your family has experienced generational trauma and you’re the first to experience mental health services, you’re the first person to stop that family trauma,” said Chicanos Por La Causa Lead Therapist Anokina Mirzapour. “That looks like acquiring new skills, learning new things and being able to move forward and heal past generations.”
We have the power to help stop the pattern of trauma for our families, friends and communities. Having the courage to seek help for your struggles can make all the difference for future generations.
Chicanos Por La Causa offers free, culturally inclusive mental health services in Spanish and English for those experiencing mental health struggles, substance abuse issues, and serious mental illness.
