Calli Ollin Academy Description
Calli Ollin Academy, (COA) a private, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) tax exempt corporation, was created by Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC), a community development corporation in Arizona to advance the educational goal of increasing educational achievement and graduation rates, developing leadership, promoting civic participation, and increasing college entrance and graduation among Latino youth. Chartered in 1996, COA is one of the first charter high schools to be state funded in Arizona and is now in its eleventh year of providing academic programs. COA, through its affiliation with CPLC, is widely recognized as a community school that addresses the educational disparities that exist in the areas of academic achievement and graduation.
COA aims to provide students with academic rigor, a greater self worth and connection to the surrounding community. COA’s academic program focuses on academic excellence, cultural enrichment, and community engagement through the infusion of Mexican American/Hiaki Studies, Expeditionary Learning (EL), Literacy, and Service Learning into the core curriculum. Unlike many charter schools, COA is classified as a high school and not an alternative program. As a high school, COA is held to the same academic and accountability standards as any public high school in the state.
